Primary Source Comparison Directions: This is an exercise in comparing and contrasting two primary sources. Carefully look at the images on the next two pages and the text on the subsequent page. Answer the following questions. If you paraphrase or directly quote lecture material or reading material, submit a work cited page on which you provide the dates of any lectures, the titles of any readings, and the page numbers of any readings if those readings have page numbers. The works cited page does not count toward the 3 pages of the assignment. Citations can be informal rather than conforming to a style, but they must clearly show where you got your information. No outside reading or original research is required. Questions to Answer: 1. What type of source is this (eg government document, newspaper, letter)? When was it created? 2. Who might be the intended audience for this source? 3. What types of data are being recorded? Describe the information being displayed. Compare and contrast the data. 4. What argument is the author of these sources making? In what ways do the details of each document support the argument? Compare and contrast the documents in order to provide evidence for the author’s argument. Source 1 Source 2: About these Items Titles: Area Description, N-S Form 8 Date Created: May, 1937 Authors: Louis Kroner, local risk assessor, Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC) Summary: Descriptions of two areas represented on the Baltimore HOLC Security Maps. Area A1 was green on the map and determined to be an area of least risk for the HOLC. Area D6 was red on the map and determined to be an area of highest risk for the HOLC.
