The 1920s represented a departure from the social and cultural norms of previous decades, the era of progressive reform, and the disruption of world war, but it also represented a continuation of capitalist economic development, anti-immigrant nativism, and racial violence and oppression.

The massive economic and cultural expansion of the 1920s came to a screeching halt following the 1929 stock market crash. The economy spiraled downward, hitting rock bottom by 1933 when the new FDR administration came to power. Average incomes and farm prices were down 50% and unemployment rose to 25%. FDR proposed a “New Deal” for the American people in which government policy would attempt to help suffering Americans and end the Great Depression. Are there aspects of the Great Depression or the New Deal that relate to economic or social problems today?
