Figurative Language.
In “The Jewelry” by Guy de Maupassant, we see that the main characters are Mr. and Mrs. Lantin, whereby Lantin met his wife as he was looking for a good girl to wife, Mrs. Lantin virtuous nature proved to him that she was the one hence ended up marrying her only for her to die after some time and him figuring out she was receiving gifts form people which were costing a lot and she lied to him that they were fake (Maupassant 655-661). He realized that all this time he thought his wife was the one for him but that was not the case.
“The Jewelry” is deceit themed, basically issued to bring out the nature of courtship, marriage, and women in the 19th century. The author uses several figurative languages, but the symbolism is the most prominent one that is seen in the story (Moore 364).Coming back to the figurative language, the Jewelry is the main thing that carries symbolism in the story (James 96). The name of the jewelry was also translated to The False Gems. This basically translates to the false nature of the relationship between the two married couple, the wife had a lover who was buying her all these expensive presents, but she told her husband they are fake but she loved them, we can at a time in the story that the wife adores fake jewelry, and shows her husband and kissed him romantically. This shows that she loved her husband despite the marriage being a scam and she had a lover that was rich enough to manage buying all those expensive jewelries. Maybe this was the reason for the wife stepping out because of the financial status of the husband who was only making three thousand five hundred francs per month whereby none of the jewelry prices was near the salary of her husband they were too expensive. Hence what was the best thing to do, is to lie to her husband that they were fake to avoid confrontation and problems in the household. But also, the fact that at the end we discover that the jewelry was being sent to the household of Lantin after being bought it shows us how blindly Mr. Lantin was loving her wife, I mean if jewelry worth that amount if money is sent to the house, maybe getting a clue and question who is sending them to the house was the right thing to do.
The Jewel also helps to bring out the irony that is brought about by the symbolism of the jewelry, the jewelry is found to be real, that ironically symbolizes the fake nature of the relation of the Lantin’s’. The depicts the jewels of the wife as garbage and mere paste jewels and glass, at least that what he thinks because their financial situation cannot allow them to afford real ones. But still the wife wears them while going to the theater, this represents what the wife was doing, although it is not elaborated that she was cheating during this when she was going to the theatre, but the fact that the theater symbolizes the unrealness and deceit of the situation, it brings the relation of the expensive real jewelry to the outside affair she was having, mainly because she wore them while going to the theater (Darren).
Then again there is another instance of symbolism, the wife is described as going to theatre wearing her diamonds and pearls and each time pairs them with the plainer dresses, here the theatre represents the love life of Mrs. Lantin that she is dealing with two men the first one the secret lover who buys her this expensive jewelry and does not spend that much time with her signifying how she wears the jewelry on her neck or the ears basically meaning that the jewelry don not take that much part of her body and therefore her life, and the fact that we have not been told how many admirers she it may be fair state that the different jewelry she has maybe form different lovers because one individual must be very rich to spend all that money on single person and the other being the fact that she wears the plainly every time, but the husband loves her too much to care what she does, this represents the position of her husband in her life that he is the one who married her, he is the one who lives with and he is the one who spends most time with her, but e is just simple. With the salary of three thousand five hundred francs per month makes the husband the plain dress that although she has the other man or men, she still has to make them fit in her life, maybe she loves her husband but he just can’t afford the luxuries of the other men.
So, at this point the jewelry has played a large part of the symbolism in this short story, but also it represents the token of love, that is the lover of Mrs. Lantin gave these items just to her that she loved and appreciated which is the typical even in our current society, for instance, the engagement rings. The jewelry also signifies legacy of the wife that she left Mr. Lantin the jewelry signifies how she lived her life, while she still alive, and the fact that we are told she still was buying items as she was sick and when she died meaning that apart from the jewelry there some money that she was still given.
The theater can also be seen as a symbol for lifestyle at that time, first of all, Lantin was accompanying her wife to the theaters after work, whereby he was bored and asked to get out of it, by asking her wife to find someone to escort her. Where it happened that she found another woman whom she went to the theater with. This symbolizes that the theater might be the affairs that most of the women participated in secretly, whereby Mr. Lantin was not about that life and he was bored signifies the loyalty and trust he blindly had towards her wife. This true because at the end Mr. Lantin sells al the Jewelry and gets money, he quits his job and he goes on to marry another woman, that somehow that the same traits of being virtuous at first impression but she again caused Lantin so much sorrow. In a way depicting the nature of women in this short story.
Another instance of figurative language is when the author describes the beauty of the wife, “beauty had a charm of Angelic Modesty”, here the beauty of the wife is compared to the charm of an angel whereby that is a metaphor that is used to emphasize how the wife physical appearance was. Personification is another technique of figurative language that is used by the author, that is in the instance he states, “the smile hovered about the lips”, here the lips are given the characteristics of living being which is hovering about the lips, theoretically a smile cannot hover about anywhere even if it is about the lips, but it just signifies the smile of the woman.
