Order Description
Based on this role play I will create something similar for my mock counselling first session.
Reflective commentary on mock counselling session
After having recorded the mock counselling session you are required to write a 750 word reflective commentary on the session.
The commentary should make note of three strengths of the mock session.
At least two of these strengths should focus on a very specific component of the counselling session, making reference to the time in which the interaction occurred in the recording (e.g., 6:01 to 6:47), the purpose of the interaction, and the reason why you consider it to have been a strength.
Examples of strengths include:
You communicated or explained a concept effectively.
Your response to the client’s comment showed empathy.
You were able to redirect the client when they got off track.
You were able to alter the client’s expectations or correct the client in a nurturing way.
It is also a requirement of the commentary to include reference to two weaknesses or things you would do differently if you had your chance again. Given that we do not expect you to edit out all your mistakes or do numerous takes of the video to get things 100% perfect, this section of your commentary is an opportunity to comment on what two important parts of the mock session, upon review, might have been done differently.
At least one of these weaknesses should be a particular interaction with a reference to the time in the video at which it occurred (e.g., 3:05 to 3:34).
Weaknesses might include:
A concept or component of the counselling session that was omitted or not fully explored.
Body language or manner that may have interfered with rapport building.
An instance where you did not listen to the client or where you were dismissive.
An instance where you were too passive or agreeable and did not redirect or correct the client.
In addition to identifying and explaining the two weaknesses you must also comment on what you could have done differently and/or what you have learned as a result of identifying the problem. In identifying weaknesses you should be very specific but not overly critical of yourself.
Finally, your discussion of your strengths and weaknesses must be considered in light of your knowledge about the counselling process and the role of the counsellor. As in your previous reflective commentary assessment tasks, you need to include academic evidence (e.g., psychological theories, principles, research, etc.) to support your arguments and give an academic underpinning to your discussion of your perceived strengths and weaknesses of the mock counseling session, and more specifically, your role as a counsellor in the helping process. For more information, make sure you refer to the guidelines for reflective commentary included in the instructions for the previous reflective commentary assessments.
Criteria
Identifying strengths
Three legitimate strengths of the counselling session were identified.
At least two of these strengths were specific (i.e., with the exact time of the event in the video reported).
There was a clear and correct explanation as to why they were considered strengths.
Identifying weaknesses
Two key weaknesses or mistakes were correctly identified.
At least one weakness was very specific and included the time it occurred.
There was a key explanation as to why they were considered weaknesses.
Suggestions for improvements
The writing identifies ways in which future sessions might be improved.
Areas of learning were insightfully identified.
Clarity of writing
The writing style was clear, succinct and points were clearly communicated
The writing competently provided evidence and explanation of points.
Demonstrated command of prose, writing was in first person.
Correct grammar, tense, spelling and syntax.
Well-structured and organised in a way that allowed for the logical sequence of ideas.
Adhered to APA formatting guidelines.
