First, this cannot be an experiment since you are not randomly assigning people to a group. In other words, this is called a psuedo-experiment. You are planning on tracking the children or simply testing them at birth??

You can compare APGARs at birth and 5 minutes between no cocaine/cocaine. You can test them at age 3 for IQ and on the physical domains of development.

The test? You are not being specific.

This is a correlation so predictor and criterion.

Criterion (Dependent Variable) this is a measurement. IN other words, IQ and or Developmental Milestone Checklist.

Depending on the social status, cultural background, and geographic location of their parents, children exposed to cocaine during pregnancy experience widely different outcomes.

How are you measuring that widely different outcome? This makes it sound like the child has nothing to do with the child.

Where is the literature?

Milestone Assessment 1

For this milestone assessment, you should develop a research question.  In doing so, you should draw on the information that has been covered in this module to ensure that your question is scientifically sound, feasible, interesting, and ethical.

What do I want you to do?

In order to complete this assignment, you should do a search of the relevant scientific literature to see what is already known about your area of interest and what remains to be explored.  As you gain a better understanding of the background information, you will ultimately be able to come to a specific research question.  As you develop the question, you should make sure that you could test your question, that doing so would provide some scientific value and be of interest, and that answering your question would not violate any of the ethical principles.

Why do I want you to do it?

A major goal in this course is to have you become familiar with how research in psychology and other closely-related fields is conducted.  Being able to review the existing literature and develop your own sound research question is an important first step in the overall research process.

How do I want you to do it?

In terms of format, you should write out your question followed by a few paragraphs of text in which you address those issues mentioned above.

Childhood medical and behavioral consequences of maternal cocaine use. Journal of Pediatric Psychology, 17(4), 389-406. What remains to be explored Most of the epidemiologic literature are focusing on the minority, low-income women. They applied the use of the stratified random or randomized method to select sample from a frame which include the income from different groups and the rural and urban setting (Singer, Farkas & Kliegman, 1992). The research can be explored by researching on more cultures, geographic places and classes of children, adults and teenagers of different ages. Research Question What are people get affected with the use of prenatal cocaine from parents of different class, cultures, and geographical location? The research is to start with the screening of the respondents of the study to determine or very the use of cocaine. The children who have not been prenatally exposed to the cocaine drug will be used for controlling the experiment. The women to be used will be from different cultures, class, and location, and they will be required to have used cocaine during their pregnancy. The test method for all respondents will be the same, regardless of the age, culture or location. The test will determine the effect of cocaine on their abilities and brain functionality. Ethical Aspects All the respondents will be informed of the intention of the research study and they are expected to willingly decide on whether to participate on the research study. They will be then required to sign an inform consent which is also to be done willingly. They are allowed to withdraw from the 3 study anytime in the course, before or after the study. Those who are below eighteen years, the parents and guardians will be informed and they will be required to assent to the inform consent form before commencing with the study. The data from the client will be indicated by use of codes to ensure that there is anonymity of the research participants. The data will also be protected and ensure that none of them is leaked before it is processed to protect the dignity of the participants. Potential Variables: 1. Independent Variable: The use of prenatal cocaine by parents of different class, cultures, and geographical locations. 2. Dependent Variables: How people get affected with as a result of this prenatal cocaine use. Hypothesis: Null Hypothesis (H0): Individuals exposed to cocaine during pregnancy do not significantly differ in their effects according to the socioeconomic status, cultural background, or geographic location of their parents. Alternative Hypothesis: Depending on the social status, cultural background, and geographic location of their parents, children exposed to cocaine during pregnancy experience widely different outcomes. 4 References Singer, L., Farkas, K., & Kliegman, R.
