PSY 305 PU Big Five Traits Openness to Experience Discussion
Description
Your textbook talks about the Big Five theory of personality. The traits in the Big Five are Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Neuroticism, and Extroversion/Introversion. Think of a character from television or a movie that exemplifies one of the traits above. In describing this, give some background of the character (in case people don’t know who they are), describe the trait and how the character clearly manifests this trait. If you can find a video clip of this person, attach that as well to make your point.
People cannot use the same person, so look over who has been presented before. Choices are first-come-first-served. Use Apa 7th edition, in-text citations and scholary resources for your post and peer responses. Respond to 2 peers post. Pose a question at the end of your original post. Peer post below..

I chose Doctor Gregory House from the show House for “Neuroticism” out of the Big Five personality traits. Being Neurotic is usually defined as having a high tendency towards anxiety, depression, and other negative feelings (Psychology Today, 2023). Gregory House is a diagnostician in the show who is addicted to painkillers due to muscle tissue having to be removed from his leg during surgery. He can’t function without it.
House often keeps to himself but has been shown to be rude to patients and self-destructive. Such as taking Oxycodone in front of patients. Having hallucinations on the drugs. Coming up with drastic measures to treat patients that are against hospital policy. And overall is emotionally distant. House even tried to get his ex-wife back by peaking at her therapist file to see what was wrong in her marriage. He drove a car into an ex-girlfriend’s House towards the second to last season of the show. House is shown to care a lot about his patients, although he acts like he doesn’t care.
But once he sees a patient and interacts with them, he clearly does care as much as he tries to stay objective. His behavior is complex, and he wouldn’t be a doctor for very long in real life. But within the confines of the show, this is someone battling their personal demons, trying to be alone. The show has a quote, which I’ll link below, where he says, “I’m better off alone. At least I convince myself I’m better that way.”
Class question: Do you think people can stop being neurotic with treatment?

Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness are the five core components of personality according to the Big Five theory of personality (Burger, 2018). Multiple research studies have consistently revealed these characteristics, which were determined through factor analysis of different personality evaluations (Burger, 2018). Extraversion measures sociability, Openness measures responsiveness to new experiences, Agreeableness measures helpfulness and trust, and Conscientiousness measures self-control and organization. Neuroticism relates to emotional stability. These traits are present in various personality indicators and have been stable over time (Burger, 2018).
A character that came to mind when thinking of someone who exemplifies one of these traits is Hermione Granger. Hermione is one of the main characters from the book/movie series created by J.K. Rowling. She is a Muggle-born (born to non-magical parents) witch who attends the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and is one of the brightest witches of her time. Although very intelligent, she consistently demonstrated she was a Gryffindor by utilizing her bravery and problem-solving abilities when in danger. This was essential in the fight against Lord Voldemort. As Hermione herself puts it, “Books! and intelligence! There are more important things – friendship and bravery…” (Wizarding World: The Official Home of Harry Potter, n.d.).
The trait that Hermione exemplifies is Conscientiousness. Conscientiousness is characterized by being well-organized, careful, and self-disciplined (Burger, 2018). Individuals with high Conscientiousness are organized, focused on plans, and determined, while those with low Conscientiousness tend to be careless, easily sidetracked, and hard to count on. Although this quality is often connected with professional and academic success, it also affects other aspects of one’s life, including one’s health and lifespan (Burger, 2018).
Hermione is an excellent example of Conscientiousness since she is well-organized, thorough, and constantly strives for perfection in her academics and actions. Hermione’s dedication to the task demonstrates her dedication to the task when she assists Ron and other students in learning the Levitation Charm in their first-year Charms class. She stresses the proper pronunciation, wand motion, and incantation’s correctness, emphasizing, “It’s LeviOsa, not LeviosA!” rather than just performing the spell and leaving it at that. She shows her classmates so they fully understand the spell’s mechanics, demonstrating her mindful character through her precise technique and attention to detail. This example shows her commitment to others’ success in their magical studies and her intelligence.
