Psychology 310 Barkley Homework 1 – 25 points 1) For the following examples of Pavlovian conditioning, identify the US, CS, UR, and CR in the spaces provided. (10 points) a. A nursing mother responds to the crying of her infant by nursing her baby, which stimulates the delivery of milk. After this has occurred several times, the sound of the baby crying causes the flow of some milk prior to nursing. US________________ UR_______________, CS________________, CR________________ b. A song continues to evoke arousal and nervousness in a person who heard the song during her first kiss with a person to whom she was extremely attracted. US_____________, UR__________________, CS________________, CR_______________ c. A cyclist was attacked by a dog while riding down Redwood Rd. On subsequent trips down the road, the cyclists heart pumps extra fast and he experiences extreme anxiety. US_____________, UR__________________, CS________________, CR_______________ d. A child has a routine of having his teddy bear with him when his parents tuck him in and comfort him to sleep at night. When his parents are away, the teddy bear comforts him. US_____________, UR__________________, CS________________, CR_______________ e. You enter your house and smell baking cookies and start to salivate after having experienced the smell followed by consumption of cookies in the past. US_____________, UR__________________, CS________________, CR_______________ f. (Bonus – extra credit point) An enuresis alarm is an alarm used to eliminate bed wetting in children. Children who wet the bed generally do not wake when their bladders are full and therefore have accidents while asleep. The alarm works by a moisture sensitive clip attaching to the child’s underwear. When the sensor detects moisture (because the child has started to pee), an alarm pinned to their clothes goes off emitting a loud noise. The loud noise will wake the child. After several pairings, the child will begin waking when their bladder is full prior to the alarm going off and thus are able to get to the bathroom prior to have an accident. US_____________, UR__________________, CS________________, CR_______________ 2) Graph a “typical” curve that illustrates a) acquisition, b) extinction and c) spontaneous recovery of a classically conditioned response. Be sure to label the axes and asymptote. Indicate for a, b, and c whether the CS and US are both presented or whether they are not. (5 points) 3) Define generalization and discrimination with regard to classical conditioning. Give an example of each. (5 points) 4) Describe the order of stimulus presentation and timing for forward/delay, backwards, trace and simultaneous conditioning. (5 points).
