Privacy Policies of YOUR FIRM

Privacy Policies of YOUR FIRM
Executive Summary
This section of the Course Paper, which may be named whatever you like (e.g., “Executive Summary,” “Introduction,” “Preamble,” etc.), should only be a handful of sentences; certainly no more than a page. Here, your team will describe the nature of your business. You should explain what your firm does, who your customers are, and briefly mention any other key stakeholders in light of privacy concerns. This is also the place to list your team members. And, finally, in this section, you should explain to your audience—i.e., your company’s staff—why privacy is important in your business. Essentially, this is where you “sell” your audience on the fact that they must abide by your company’s privacy policies.

Policy Statements
Policy 1.1 Policy Statement Section Overview
This is where you organize and list each applicable privacy policy statement. These are the rules that govern your company’s actions, and those of your staff. You need to determine an organization schema. Look around online to find examples of a useful style. Or, you may choose to use your current workplace documentation as a go-by.

Policy 1.2 Policy Statements Contents
The contents of these policies should contain at least the following features:

· The policy, itself, such as “Reasonable Expectation of Privacy for Employees.”

· The laws, regulations, or standards that relate to the policy at issue.

· An example, when applicable, that helps your audience understand the policy.

· Directions on how to effect the policy. For example, if your company processes payments by credit or debit cards, and your policy is something like “Anyone who processes payments via payment cards must conform their actions to PCI DSS standards related to privacy.” then you may want to insert a link to those standards. Or, perhaps, incorporate examples as mentioned directly above.

This list is not exhaustive. Depending on the set of facts, you may need to include more.

Policy 1.3 Comprehensive Policy Statements
The Policy Statements must be a comprehensive body. Do not omit the discussion of laws that may apply to your business. This means that you must understand what your business does, and its privacy implications. Every company has employees, so employees’ privacy must be addressed. While it is debatable, I have discussed that any HRIS, or a company’s personnel records kept otherwise, has the propensity to contain medical information that we now know to refer to as “PHI.” Thus, you should have some policy that governs handling those data vis-à-vis privacy. Could your company be known as a “financial institution?” If so, you must discuss GLB Act privacy policies.

The point is that in three to five pages you must tell your employees everything they need to know about maintaining appropriate privacy while conducting your business.

Policy 2.1 Scoring the Course Paper
The Course Paper is worth 100 points. I will give up to ten points for the submission’s form and format. That includes its organization, page count and team size, and grammar and spelling. The form and format is important because if a policy document is disorganized, contains typographical errors, or is hard to read otherwise, employees will not respect or even use it as the guidance it is meant to be. Consider a numbering or another outline styled structure to identify policy clauses.

I will give up to ten additional points for the introductory section, and whether you included all of the required information.

I will give up to 80 points for the policy statements. Questions I will have in mind when reviewing your policy statements include, Did the team incorporate what we’ve learned about privacy? Can the document be read and understood by all levels of an organization? Are the policies concise, or vague and wordy?

Policy 2.2 Writing Assistance
Writing assistance is available by emailing a copy of your file to the International Academic Services office (yes, even if you are not an international student) at IAS@ucumberlands.edu. I highly recommend that you give the IAS Team at least two or three business days to review your work. Take into consideration the fact that you will likely need to respond to their efforts with some rewriting of your own, and you can start to calculate how much in advance of the due date you should be planning on sending them a draft.

Policy 3.1 Cautionary Tales From Prior Submissions
Here are some of the ways that students have lost points in prior years:

· Teams and pages. Do not submit as an individual; you must be part of a team. Do not exceed the page count. Only use Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) or Adobe PDF format. Each team member must individually submit a copy of the team’s work. You cannot rely on one member’s submission. And, when two team members submit dissimilar work, it evinces a non-functioning team.

· This is not a website privacy policy document. While one of your company’s policies, assuming you have a website, should be that your websites must include the proper policy statements, this is not an assignment on writing a website policy statement. If you are submitting a “Terms of Use” or “Privacy Notice,” you are not following the requirement that your policies must govern your business. Website Privacy Statements are aimed at users of your website.

· Don’t skip the obvious. If you are an insurance company, and fail to draft a policy that addresses HIPAA privacy, that’s a big omission. If children may access your website, you better include some acknowledgement of COPPA and CIPA’s privacy laws. See, Policy 1.3, above.

· Get going now. While having up to five people working on this can make it very easy to accomplish, you cannot wait until the end of the course to start.

· Perfect the writing. Spelling errors, syntax and grammar issues, and other poor English writing artifacts all take away from the credibility of your policies. When your company does not care enough to write well, your employees will not care enough about privacy to help you avoid risks.

· This is a policy document. In some prior examples, valuable paper “real estate” was wasted on describing marketing plans, or a company’s history, or other immaterial data. The introductory section is important, but it is not the crux of this learning objective.

There are other ways that students have lost points, so please consider the entire body of instructions and requirements. These, in my opinion, came up often enough, or were easy enough to avoid, to include for your benefit.

1. I think there are different ethical competencies that I could employ when trying to establish a genuine and ethical relationship with Ms. Mason. There are 13 competencies that are introduced in the text and are divided into three different categories. The categories are moral integrity, communication, and concern. (Butts & Rich, 2016, p. 81-82).

Moral integrity is a very important aspect of nursing ethics. When speaking with Ms. Mason I would be honest and use my own judgement on what is right and wrong to say to her. If I was pro choice or pro life in this scenario it would be unethical to persuade Ms. Mason to what I believe, or not inform her of other possible options. An aspect of moral integrity is truth telling, “…nurses should not intentionally deceive or mislead patients.” (Butts & Rich, 2016, p. 115). This shows that even if my own personal values are different, I should not deceive the patient in any way.

Next, I would employ ethical communication skills that will benefit Ms. Mason as well as her family. Mindfulness is a large part of communication between nurses and their patients, it involves being present, engaged, and attentive to what is going on (Butts & Rich, 2016, p. 93). If I was mindless while the physician explained the options to Ms. Mason I would not be able to accurately judge how Ms. Mason is feeling about the options and I would also not be an effective listener. Effective listening means that me and Ms. Mason would talk about the options and I would use nonverbal cues, such as nodding, to let her know that I am listening and absorbing the information. Effective listening is very important in this relationship because it would allow me to really tone in and focus on what Ms. Mason is saying and trying to convey, and then responding with a clarification of her intentions or repeating it in my own words. I think this also lets Ms. Mason know that I do care and am listening and want to give the best support that I can and the way I communicate can show a lot by this. Personally, I think communication is one of the most important aspect in creating this relationship with Ms. Mason.

Last, I would also act and show concern for Ms. Mason which can provide a safe feeling. Advocating for Ms. Mason and her interests is a very important aspect of the care she is receiving. Protecting her autonomy can show Ms. Mason my care as well.

2. The Masons are in the process of what is one of the most important decisions they will ever make. That being said, as a nurse I would exercise the ethical competencies of truthfulness and truthtelling as well as communication through effective listening. There is no right or wrong way to process all the information the Masons have been given and they are looking to me as a nurse to help them through this decision making process by giving them all the necessary information.

Truthtelling is so important as a nurse. Your patients come to you at their most vulnerable state for guidance. “Nurses are usually ethically obligated to tell the truth and are noT intentionally to deceive or mislead patients” (Butts & Rich, 2016, pg. 85). It is important for me to be truthful with Ms. Mason through her decision making process. If I were to deceive her it could lead to the wrong decision for her and her unborn child.

Also, in this situation communication is very important. A good way for good communication is through effective listening. Ms. Mason is going to have questions, concerns, etc. and it is up to me to listen to these things effectively so I can respond appropriately. As a nurse it is up to me to have open communication and listen effectively so when she makes her decision she has no reservations.

**FOR THE TWO POST BELOW STATE WHETHER OR NOT YOU AGREE WITH THEM AND WHY? **

1. DH has been having problems with bleeding. It has been difficult to get the bleeding to stop once it has started. Discuss how AML could affect the formation of and numbers of platelets circulating in DH’s blood. (Hint: Discuss how platelets are associated with the myeloid cell line.)

Platelets are components of the blood which are responsible for normal blood clotting and assist in the repair of damaged blood vessels. Platelets begin as hematopoietic stem cells and derive from the myeloid cell line, megakaryoblasts, in the bone marrow. DH has been having problems with abnormal bleeding and difficulties of stopping it. This indicates that the number of platelets circulating in DH’s blood is slow. The reason for such a low blood platelet count is an Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Since AML is caused by damage to the DNA of the myeloid line of blood cells, abnormal cells are being produced and built up in the bone marrow. This interferes with the production and formation of normal blood cells and platelets.

2. Who could safely receive transfusions from DH’s donated blood (A+)? What blood types should absolutely not receive transfusions of DH’s blood? Explain your answer.

Erythrocytes commonly referred to as red blood cells contain surface markers or antigens which can be found in blood. If the immune system detects a foreign antigen, it will begin to fight it resulting in death which is why blood typing is important. The only antigens your body will not fight in normal circumatances are the ones found in it own erythrocytes so that the body does not fight against its self. There are 2 possible antigens in blood; A and B. In blood type A, only the A antigen is present. Since the donated blood was A+, this means that only a person with blood type AB+ or A+ can receive the blood.

Good discussions on the smoking correlation discussion, Danielle.

Comment 1

Good discussions on the smoking correlation discussion, Danielle.

OK, now just to brush up the kinds of correlation we have considered in this statistics course, consider this advertised case study:

A recent study of recently deceased people (population = 100) determined a strong positive correlation; the correlation established was between the age of the death of the deceased, and the length of the longest line on his or her palm.

From the abovementioned correlation, would you say that this provides support for a claim that a longer palm line necessarily predicts a longer life?

Anyone?

Comment 2

Good examples! Frankly, in many ways, some of the statistics I see thrown out there boggles my mind.

Case in point: it actually amazes me how, for instance, drug companies are able to find safe haven with this much of misleading information. I have always been curious to see if researchers ever challenge them in order to validate when they’ve generated the data. They should if they have concerns for the well-being and general health of the public. In fact, I think some stepping-in should come from the government as well.

In this context, I know the FDA plays a great part; however, I also feel that the advertisements provided should be as accurate as possible. Usually, they’re only looking for monetary gain.

What do you think?
