Policy and State Boards of Nursing

Within the far-reaching and multi-layered realm of policy and reform, government at the state level plays an essential role. Consider the federally enacted PPACA’s individual mandate which sought to increase the number of consumers who receive insurance coverage and, therefore, greater access to care. In a system that is already stretched beyond capacity and confronting a nursing shortage, how can the health care system meet this increased demand? Since state boards of nursing determine scope of practice, it is important to stay up to date and current with the policies and regulations that are created by the state board of nursing.

To prepare:

Review the Thomas, Benbow, and Ayars article and the Watson and Hillman article focusing on how states regulate advanced nursing practice and how legislative changes are impacting scope of practice.
Visit your state board of nursing website and/or contact the board to determine how the state board controls advanced practice through regulations (google mbon.org for my state board of nursing)
Determine if your state board has created any new policies or regulations that address changes to scope of practice in response to legislative changes.

The authors provide an analysis of varying state health care policies, with a basic premise that health care risk is either “pooled”—shared, or “actuarial”—segmented by risk level. Most states have taken a segmented approach to health care, and therefore, have not solved health care issues such as rising costs and access to care. The authors maintain that federal action is needed to create a uniformed approach to health care.

The authors concluded that political and economic factors can positively predict individual state Medicaid spending, and that actual need has a negative impact on spending. In conclusion, a uniform, federal structure may be the only method to ensure equal access to Medicaid.

Shopping malls, are an important part of any developing and advanced economy. In the United States, for example, there are over 50 000 shopping centres and malls, which contribute an estimated 2.3 trillion dollars in sales to the world’s largest economy and account for 75% of all non-automotive consumer sales (Miller & Washington, 2011). Shopping malls are also a feature of many towns and cities around the world. In fact, they are built to international templates: a mall in Rio de Janeiro looks inside just like a mall in Sydney or Paris, with same brands and structure. Thus it is reasonable to suppose that malls have effectively evolved to an optimal layout and balance of retail options (Yuo & Lizieri, 2013).
There is evidence that shopping malls have been slowly disappearing in the developed world. Retail consultant Howard Davidowitz (cited in Peterson, 2014) predicts half of all shopping malls to fail within the next 15 to 20 years. Current estimates also suggest that 15% of all current US malls will fail in the next years and this is reflected in Sears closing some 300 stores since 2010 (Peterson, 2014) and the investment in malls falling in the US from a high 175 million square feet in 2002 to 50 million square feet in 2011 (Miller & Washington, 2011). Malls in lower and middle class areas are expected to suffer the most (Peterson, 2014). Although the picture in Europe appears a little different, where there remains continued investment in malls, despite concerns about the effects of government austerity and economic conditions (Taylor, 2011). Malls, as other brick and mortar retailers also face a global threat of increasing online purchases of consumers (Book Publishing Report, 2012; French, 2013; Speer, 2012).
You are required to provide a consumer behaviour analysis as to why shopping malls in Australia may or may not be under threat. You should consult the textbook (social and individual) factor and using outside references, which justify your position on this issue. 2. Based on this analysis, prepare an outline of a marketing plan for a regional shopping mall on how to meet the challenges of online retailing.

This project includes a two-day food record and analysis of your diet along with an assessment of your fitness. You will critically evaluate your diet and develop a personal plan for lifestyle changes to benefit your health and well-being. The program requests some personal data for the analysis. Next, proceed to record your food intake. Once you finish your food intake, select “My Reports.” Copy and save your results to be submitted with your report. Submit Food Groups and Calories, Nutrients, Food Details and Physical Activity reports. Review your food intake and discuss shortfalls.

Next, choose a second day and plan a day for food intake which will meet all recommendations, then live this day; be sure to write down everything which you consume, including drinks and snacks. Try to include items you love to eat. Enter your food in the SuperTracker and analyze. Did you meet all requirements? How did your food intake on this day differ from your other recorded day?

Plan regular physical activity for a week, attempting to meet recommendations for all types of fitness. Next, follow your plan and note your physical activity in a log. Try to include activities you love, and also note sleeping patterns, personal feelings, thoughts, and additional stresses which might occur. Next, return to the beginning and analyze your physical activity on the CNPP website.

Your report should discuss the following questions:

Compare and contrast your food record and analysis from the two days recorded.
Did you like your food intake for the days record? How could you improve your diet, and how can you introduce variety?
What do you consider the most important issue about your diet covered in the course, and how will you apply this to your life? Have you implemented changes and noticed any differences so far? What will be the major challenges to a better diet?
How is the physical activity log? Was it difficult to adhere to an exercise regimen? Did you feel any difference during this week compared to a week before this course began? What will be the major challenges to maintaining a healthy physical activity regimen?
What aspect of this course provided the best and most useful information for you? How do you see this course work affecting your life 6 months from now? A year from now?
