Final Prompt: An Advice Letter to Future Students
After reviewing your writing and work this semester, compose a brief welcome and advice letter of 500-750 words (approximately 2-3 double spaced pages) directed at future students in English 1100. You can use a tone that would be appropriate of a letter, which means this doesn?t have to be academic writing?it can absolutely be more conversational. In this letter, share with these future students what you?ve learned in the course and advice you have for them as they undertake the (sometimes dreaded!) first-year composition requirement. Some questions you might touch on (though feel free to ignore these questions and just write from your own ideas and experiences too):
a. What kind of writing does this class ask students to undertake?
b. What is both satisfying and challenging about this writing?

Topic: Criterion Theory and Development

I/O Project Part I

Details:

Your assignments in this class will take place in two parts. In Part 1, you will choose a topic that you may use for your dissertation. You will discuss the theoretical foundations found within the literature to support the topic and suggest why this topic should be studied and the possible research questions your proposed study will answer. Although the 10 Key Strategic Points may inform your paper, this paper will not be your prospectus.

General Requirements:

This assignment uses a rubric that is ATTACHED. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the work to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
Use the Proquest Dissertations and Theses @ Grand Canyon University link located on the database page at GCU Library to research/explore other GCU learner dissertations that have a topic similar to the one you have chosen.
Review the 10 Key Strategic Points template located in the DC Network.
Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments.
Use academic sources, including peer-reviewed journal articles, scholarly books, government reports, and other instructor-approved texts.
Include a minimum of five scholarly topic-relevant sources (majority of articles should be published within past 5 years)
Directions:

Using current empirical sources (i.e., published within past 5 years) to write a paper of 2,000-2,250 words in which you address the following issues:

Choose an I-O topic of interest that you intend to use for your dissertation and delineate why it is important for the discipline of I-O psychology to study this topic.
Identify the gap in the literature that your study will fill and discuss the problem you will address through the study.
Identify the theoretical foundations (e.g., model or theory) and seminal author(s) of the model or theory.
Discuss how the identified problem will be understood:

Describe the location of your study.

Of the four types of survey methods discussed in the text – self-administered questionnaire, interview survey, telephone survey and online survey – discuss how each might be applied to your research proposal. Based upon your research question/hypothesis, what do you think would be the most appropriate method of conducting a survey? Why?

My topic proposal is:

Crime and Mental Illness. What can be learned about how mental illness influences whether or not someone is likely to commit crimes? Are certain mental illnesses more prone to criminal behavior?

Morbidity and mortality are the two demographic phenomena most commonly studied in epidemiology. These two phenomena allow us to view disease trends and associated changes over time.

Discuss morbidity and mortality in terms of how you would use them in developing prevention strategies aimed at increasing attention to disease and decreasing adverse health outcomes. Which phenomenon is better to study to develop preventive strategies? Why?

Analyze the case of Mrs. Ard on page 215 of Legal Aspects of the textbook. The case states On the afternoon of May 20, the patient, Mr. Ard, began feeling nauseous. He was in pain and had shortness of breath. Although his wife rang the call bell several times, it was not until sometime later that evening that someone responded and gave Ard medication for the nausea. The nausea continued to worsen. Mrs. Ard then noticed that her husband was having difficulty breathing. He was reeling from side to side in bed. Believing that her husband was dying, she continued to call for help. She estimated that she rang the call bell for 1.25 hours before anyone responded. A code was eventually called. Unfortunately, Mr. Ard did not survive the code. There was no documentation in the medical records, on May 20 between 5:30 P.M. and 6:45 P.M., that would indicate that any nurse or physician checked on Ard’s condition. This finding collaborated Mrs. Ard’s testimony regarding this time period.

A wrongful death action was brought against the hospital, and the district court granted judgment for Mrs. Ard. The hospital appealed.

Ms. Krebs, an expert in general nursing, stated that it should have been obvious to the nurses from the physicians’ progress notes that the patient was a high risk for aspiration. This problem was never addressed in the nurses’ care plan or in the nurses’ notes.

On May 20, Ard’s assigned nurse was Ms. Florscheim. Krebs stated that Florscheim did not perform a full assessment of the patient’s respiratory and lung status. There was nothing in the record indicating that she completed such an evaluation after he vomited. Krebs also testified that a nurse did not conduct a swallowing assessment at any time. Although Florscheim testified that she checked on the patient around 6:00 P.M. on May 20, there was no documentation in the medical record.

Ms. Farris, an expert in intensive care nursing, testified for the defense. She disagreed with Krebs that there was a breach of the standard of care. However, on cross-examination, she admitted that if a patient was in the type of distress described by Mrs. Ard and no nurse checked on him for 1.25 hours, then that would fall below the expected standard of care.
