Health Communication; Culture; and Advocacy

Health communication initiatives help to clarify who needs to know what and when the information needs to be known. Health communication is important in the health program planning process. The information might be used to influence health decisions or behaviors among people. There are a variety of ways health initiatives are communicated (i.e., brochures, banners, media, pamphlets, or other advertising methods).

Using the readings for this week, the South University Online Library, and the Internet, respond to the following:

Research and select four health communication plans. Determine if the health message or concept had been pretested. Explain in 2–3 paragraphs the findings.
Be sure to support your statements with scholarly references.

Respond to the questions using the lessons and vocabulary found in the readings for this week. Support your answers with examples and research. Question 1: Monumental Architecture and Sculpture

In this question, I will discuss three sculptures. These are;

(i) Imperial Palaces of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Beijing and Shenyang in China in the 15th century.

(ii) The ancient mysteries of the Ajanta caves in Maharashtra, India (2nd century BCE to 480 CE)

(iii) Atomic Bomb Dome/Hiroshima Peace Memorial in Hiroshima in 1945.

Its construction took place between 1406 and 1420. The history of the entire Forbidden City which houses Imperial Palaces of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Beijing and Shenyang in China started in the 15th century when it was put up as the palace for Ming emperors of China (G., 2013). It was the palace of the Chinese emperor from Mid-Ming Dynasty to Qing Dynasty which ended in 1912. It now houses the Palace Museum. The meaning of the now Palace Museum is to educate the generations how things were when it was still a palace (G., 2013). Unlike structures like Mount Rushmore and the 9/11 Memorial which were created in memory of the fallen citizens who are victims of terrorism, this is a historic sculpture.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c3/Ajanta_%2863%29.jpgThe ancient mysteries of the Ajanta caves are located in Maharashtra, India. It is one of the series of Buddhist cave temples. It dates back the 2nd century BC for the first phase of Ajanta cave. Ajanta Caves was carved out of the solid rock which lied along Waghora River (Behl, 2008). Ajanta caves were created with the aim of preserving the culture and for religious purposes. The visual characteristics of Ajanta caves represent the culture of India as well as Buddhism (Behl, 2008). It is a cultural sculpture unlike Mount Rushmore and 9/11 which were as a result of terrorism or lack of peace.

Rock Cut Ajanta Caves, India

Hiroshima Peace Memorial, also known as Atomic Bomb Dome. It is a skeletal building whose purpose is commemorating the dropping of atomic bomb. The damaged structure was preserved intentionally after the Hiroshima bombing, and some people also refer to the skeletal building as Genbaku Dome. It was preserved in 1966 after Hiroshima City Council made the decision. The visual characteristics of this building show how severe the bombing was (Kloosterman, 2016). Comparing it to Mount Rushmore and 9/11, they are similar because they are as a result of an act of terrorism or lack of peace.

Question 2: The Function of Art Objects

In this question, I will discuss three objects. These are;

(i) Bronze vessels invented 5000 years ago in China

(ii) Ritual pot with bull-headed handle invented in an early 20th century in India

(iii) Dogon iron lamp from Mali

Bronze vessels were invented 5000 years ago in China. Bronze vessels led ancestors of modern China from Stone Age to Bronze Age. These vessels were delicately decorated with multiple and diverse ranges of motifs and designs (Pearce, 2017). Bronze vessels were used in numerous aspects of life such as ceremonial offerings, musical instruments and also as weapons of war.

Ritual pot with bull-headed handle was invented in an early 20th century in India. It was used by elders in ceremonies where traditional beer would be decanted in these ritual pots (Pearce, 2017). To offer their blessing, the elders would drink several sips of beer and then hand over to other family members after which they blew the empty ritual pots.

Epidemiology Homework- Need Help

Based on the information in this video, Meridian Diagnostics Inc. decided to produce an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (EIA test kit) to screen for presence of Salmonella heidelberg, so patients who became sickened, could be diagnosed quickly and treated. Patient blood samples could be tested for presence of the S. heidelberg bacteria as opposed to other Genera and species of bacteria.

1. With this information, by constructing a 2-by-2 table, calculate the predictive-value positive and predictive-value negative of the EIA in a hypothetical population of 1,000,000 blood donors. Using a separate 2-by-2 table, calculate PVP and PVN for a population of 1000 ill patients. Assume that the actual prevalence of S. heidelberg among blood donors is 0.04% (0.0004) and that of people who ate Foster’s chicken is 10.0% (0.10).

2. Do you think that the EIA is a good screening test for the hospital? Why or why not?

3. Do you think that the EIA performs well enough to justify using the test outcomes in court cases? Why or why not?

4. If sensitivity and specificity remain constant, what is the relationship of prevalence to predictive-value positive and predictive-value negative?

Given their success with the EIA for S. heidelberg, Meridian Diagnostics decided to perfect their design, and use it to produce an EIA to test for E. coli O157 H7.

5. With this information, by constructing a 2-by-2 table, calculate the predictive-value positive and predictive-value negative of the EIA in a hypothetical population of 500,000 blood donors. Using a separate 2-by-2 table, calculate PVP and PVN for a population of 600 ill patients. Assume that the actual prevalence of E. coli among blood donors is 0.02% (0.0002) and that of people who ate Jack-In-the-Box hamburgers is 15.0% (0.15).

Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia

Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia

When an individual has a platelet count less than 150,000 platelets/uL, he or she is considered to have thrombocytopenia. This condition can occur because of genetic predispositions or can be acquired. When thrombocytopenia is seen due to congenital origin, the underlying disease could be TAR syndrome, Wiskott Aldrich syndrome, or a gene mutation. Acquired thrombocytopenia is usually seen in relation to viral infections, mediation use, a nutrient deficiency, , renal failure, or radiation therapy, or cancer (Huether & McCance, 2017, p. 541).

Thrombocyopenia can be induced with the use of heparin. Furthermore, this condition is called heparin induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) syndrome. It occurs in result to an immune response to the use of heparin. It is less common when using unfractionated heparin, like Lovenox. The immune response causes IgG antibodies to react against the heparin-platelet factor, which leads to platelet activation. The increase in platelet factor 4 and thrombin production leads to an increase in platelet consumption. Platelet consumption results in low platelet counts which appear five to ten days later after heparin was administered (Huether & McCance, 2017, p. 541).

With HIT syndrome, the patient will experience venous and arterial clotting, while having low platelets levels. This problem is difficult to manage because the patient is clotting and has a risk for bleeding at the same time. Priority management of the patient’s condition is essential (Krzych, Nowacka, & Knapik, 2015).

Drug Therapy

After HIT syndrome has been identified, it is important to stop the use of heparin and look at other avenues of anticoagulant therapy. There is not a reversal medication to stop HIT from occurring. Managing the patient based on their clinical manifestations is the mainstay of treatment (Huether & McCance, 2017, p. 541).

Behavior

Patients with HIT syndrome typically need platelet replacement. Platelets are a blood component and require consent from the patient prior to them being given. Some individuals have religious beliefs, such as a Jehovah witness, in regards to receiving blood products and will refuse platelet therapy. This therapy is patient choice, but refusal of platelets can be detrimental to the patient. It is important to give all patients the option to receive therapy and discuss pros and cons of their decision. Promoting patient decision making is essential as we strive to maintain their autonomy (Edelen, 2014).

Anthropology Mini Essays

Essay Questions

Both of the following questions will appear on your exam. You can best prepare for the essay question by writing out your answer to each one and practicing it as you study. An added benefit of doing this is that you will also be reviewing key concepts that will be useful for the rest of the exam.

1. Darwin originally believed that natural selection could not be seen in action. Today we know this is not the case. Explain one specific example of natural selection in action discussed in course materials. In order to completely address this question, you must include a clear description of how natural selection works and how the example illustrates natural selection. Be sure to choose an example with enough information to completely address the question. 2-3 substantial paragraphs.

2. Evolutionary theory predicts that deleterious conditions will be selected out of populations and, therefore, occur at a very low rate. However, certain genetic diseases are more common in some populations than others and natural selection can explain this variation. Using Tay-Sachs or sickle-cell anemia as your example, explain why these diseases are more common in some populations than others. Be specific. 2-3 substantial paragraphs.

One way informatics can be especially valuable is in capturing data to inspire improvements and quality change in practice. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) collects data related to adverse events and safety concerns. If you are working within a practice setting to implement a new electronic health record (EHR) system this is just one of the many considerations your team would need to plan for during the rollout process.
