An important part of our course is researching information on diversity and multiculturalism and its social, cultural, and ethical impact upon individual citizens, groups of people, and society at large. If an organization is serious about its commitment to diversity, one would expect that this would be reflected in the design, content, and graphics of the Web site. In this semester, we have learnt many knowledges about human development from birth to death. People show different characters in different period, and by studying these characters and we will know ourselves much better.

For the toddlerhood and early childhood, human in toddlerhood can coordinate the activities of the senses with motor activities and in early childhood is capable of symbolic representation, such as in language, but with limited ability to use mental operations (slides for chapter 4).

For the middle childhood and adolescence, human in middle childhood can use mental operations, but only in concrete, immediate experience; difficulty thinking hypothetically, and when people enter in the adolescence, people will able to think logically and abstractly and formulate hypotheses and test them systematically, and thinking is more complex, and can think about thinking (slides for chapter 4).

For the emerging adulthood and young adulthood, people will achieve their physical peak. When people enter the adulthood from emerging adulthood. Most people will get marriage when they are in young adulthood, and will pay more attention to their family

For the middle adulthood and late adulthood. People in the middle will have the lowest marriage satisfaction period, but when they enter the late adulthood, the satisfaction of their life will go higher and higher.

For the culture, I compare the Chinese culture and the American culture. All young people in both culture will enter college after their high school (generally 18 years old). Thus, they must deal with some problem by themselves. And the parents in both culture will give their children support.

For the different, most Chinese families only have one child, so the parents may pay more attention and give more help to their children, but in America, there are normally many children in each family, so the children need to maintenance the relationship between brothers and sisters.

Part 2:

I think the video that we watched about wealth distribution is most applicable to my life. Because, for my friends, they come from many different families, some are rich, some are average.

The lecture of the course makes me think differently about my life. It is the last question“what is a good life?”. In the past, I think maybe rich people have good life and poor people have bad life. But that may be true.

The most interesting topic about this courses is also the wealth distribution.

The think that will stick me is that I leant some knowledge about our whole life. In each phrase, there will be some normal phenomenon. For example, in the middle age, people will face middle age crisis. By studying this course, I will not lose my head when I face these problems.

What is it?

For the public write-up, you’re writing a short description of the economic history of your site for a general audience. Imagine that someone is visiting your site in person, and pulls up the Economic History Tour app on their phone: what would they want to read? What would YOU want to read?

To show you understand the economics behind what you’re studying, you must also include a short technical write-up that covers the same material, but has an economist as the intended audience. It doesn’t have to be very long, but it should demonstrate that you understand how to answer your research question using economics, and can discuss your results

Your public write-up should…

· Summarize the economic historical importance of the site.

· Answer your research question.

· Be INTERESTING to the general public – test it out by sharing it with friends and family! If they’re bored or don’t understand it, you should probably change something.

· Be 1,000 words or less. (Would YOU want to read a 5,000 word entry?)

You DON’T have to cover the WHOLE economic history of your site. If there’s one particularly interesting story you want to tell, go for it! You just need to make sure that you explain the economic historical relevance of the story, and that the story is an answer to your research question.

If you’re not sure about the tone, pretend you’re writing the article for a newspaper’s weekend edition, or a general interest web site.

What do you need to hand in?

1. (1%) Your Group Name, Group Members, Site and Research Question.

2. (70%) Your public write-up.

a. No jargon/technical language; readable by the general public

b. 1,000 words or less (my sample answer is under 500 words)

c. Answers research question using sound economic thinking

3. (20%) A technical write-up showing me you understand and can discuss the economics behind your site.

a. Correctly uses economic models you have learned throughout your studies of economics at UVic to understand the economic history of your site.

b. 1,000 words or less (can be MUCH less)

c. Answers your research question using sound economic thinking

4. (9%) The sources used to research your write-up, cited in APA form.

a. At least 3 (yes, they can all be sources you’ve used before – in fact, I expect it!)

b. At least 1 of the 3 sources is a primary source (newspaper from the right time period, diary, archival source, etc.).

A few tips for the public writeup:

Your write-up should answer the ‘WH’ questions: Who? What? When? Where? How? Why?

You should avoid jargon or technical language as much as possible. Think of your audience! Pretend you’re writing for a smart high schooler or an elderly tourist.

’Jargon’ can include names & dates without context:

Which is better?

• ‘1858’ or ‘1858, the first year of the gold rush’?

• ‘James Douglas’, or ‘Sir James Douglas, first governor of BC and former fur trader for the Hudson’s Bay Company’?

Names and dates mean NOTHING by themselves – add a bit of context that will make your audience understand and be interested in those. If you can’t find any reason why they should care, consider not mentioning them.

Hudson Bay Company as the largest company in early Canada history, also is a first commercial corporation company in the world. Economic Relevance of Research Question:

The city of Victoria was founded by the Hudson’s Bay Company on March 14, 1843. The first location of the trading post was “Camosack”(the harbour where Victoria now stands), meaning “Rush of Water”. Later, the Hudson’s Bay Company moved to the southern end of Vancouver Island, which is known as “Fort Albert” by local people nowadays. It was officially named “Fort Victoria” after the great British Queen. The Company’ main headquarters, Fort Vancouver, was too far from the British Columbia interior and coast to service them efficiently.

PUBLIC WRITE-UP (449 words) Before moving to its current home in 1899, the ‘Chinese Hospital’ was a wooden hut on Fisgard street where poor, sick Chinese men were given rice, a bench and a blanket to wait out their illness. Recovery was rare, and local journalists referred to it as the ‘Chinese Death House’. The Fraser Valley gold rush, which lasted from 1858 to 1863, brought many Chinese immigrants to Victoria, as did construction of the first railways in British Columbia. When the gold ran out and the railways were finished, many immigrants found themselves out of a job and unprepared to face Canadian winters. The Chinese business community of Victoria established a Benevolent Society in 1884. One of its goals was to build a free hospital to take care of the needy sick. The wooden hut, or ‘Taipingfang’ (Peaceful Room) was their first attempt, and it soon became clear that it was not enough. Both the City of Victoria and the Chinese community wanted Chinatown to have its own culturally sensitive care. Victoria had its hospitals, but the staff spoke only English, and Chinese immigrants were unfamiliar with Western Medicine. Dealing with Chinese patients was difficult for English speakers. Frustrated, many of the sickest and oldest Chinese would go back to China for treatment. A proper Chinese hospital was finally built at the turn of the century. It was paid for by charging two dollars to every person who returned to China. After World War I, this source of funding dried up as Vancouver took over as the port of choice for Chinese immigrants. By 1930, the hospital owed more taxes than it could pay, and the City of Victoria took ownership of the building.

Even with government subsidies, it was challenging for the Chinese Hospital to provide the expected quality of care. Over the next few decades, control of the hospital changed from the Benevolent Association, to Victoria’s chief medical officer, and a ‘Chinese Community Hospital Society of Victoria’ in 1961. No one questioned that Chinatown needed its own care facility, but attempts to reinvent the hospital as a convalescent home, private hospital and community care centre all struggled. Renewal came in 1982. The same year that ‘E.T.’ thrilled audiences around the world, the Chinatown Care Centre was built with funding from the Ministry of Health. The immigrants of the 19th century had settled and integrated into Canadian society, and their Canadian-born children were fluent in English. This allowed a move away from acute care, which could be obtained at the Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals, and toward long-term elder care. Today, the Victoria Chinatown Care Centre provides Chinese-language, culturally sensitive care to up to 30 residents at a time.

TECHNICAL WRITE-UP (584 Words) The history of the Chinese Hospital can be seen as the result of the constrained maximization of community health. Community health may be produced by Chinese health care, Western health care, or sick people leaving the community. The budget constraint is determined by exit fees, fund-raisers and city/provincial subsidies. The input mix varies as time goes by in response to changes in income, relative prices and the substitutability of inputs (due to ‘technological’ change). The Chinese community in Victoria is subject to a budget constraint that has changed over time in magnitude and regularity. In 1884, a $2 one-time Benevolent Association (CCBA) ‘foundation fee’ was used to pay for a Taipingfang on Fisgard Street. The same fee was used to pay for everything else in the CCBA, and the high opportunity cost of using these funds led to a ‘hospital’ that was little more than a wooden hut, wooden benches, a few blankets, and rice.

In 1893, a caretaker was added to provide herbal medicine, clean up and cart away bodies. This is consistent with an increased budget due to an increased Chinese population. After 1899, funding for continuing operations was obtained via a 2-dollar fee collected from any Chinese person leaving Victoria for China. This allowed operation of a permanent hospital on Herald Street. As alternatives to Victoria (e.g. Vancouver) opened up in the 1920s, and less people make the trip to China, this source of funding dried up. From 1920 onward, regular fundraisers were held to pay for major renovations, but these irregular, unpredictable payments weren’t enough to cover hospital salaries and maintenance. In the mid-1920s, the price of Chinese health care rose due to the hospital losing its tax-exempt status. This price fell dropped when the City of Victoria took control of the hospital property and started subsidizing rent and patient care. The issue of regular income wouldn’t be resolved until the establishment of the Victoria Chinatown Care Centre in 1982. Currently, in addition to provincial health subsidies, the 30 residents of the Centre pay up to 80% of their income to cover costs. The tradeoff between inputs also changed with time. At first, Western medicine was ‘expensive’ due to transaction costs including language barriers, discrimination and lack of experience with Western treatments. Returning the chronically ill to China was a relatively efficient way of improving the health of the remaining community. As immigrants integrated and built lives and families in Canada, this became less attractive. The establishment of the CCBA in 1884 strengthened community ties, organized the legal fight against discrimination and made the ‘move back to China’ option more costly. The local press publicized the Taipingfang’s poor condition and high mortality, leading the CCBA to publicly promise reforms. By 1899, it was clear that a permanent Chinese hospital was desirable, and the structure was built at 555 Herald Street.

The cost-effectiveness of the hospital fell sharply after the 1920s. Western medicine becames a more attractive input as Chinese immigrants and their children gained familiarity with both the treatments and the English language. City hospitals such as the Royal Jubilee were now an option for Chinese health care. This left the ‘Chinese hospital’ free to focus on the parts of care that most needed cultural sensitivity, and that were not well-served by existing Western health facilities. The most notable of these was long-term care for elderly Chinese. The once-hospital became a dedicated residential home in 1982. Currently, over 60% of the care facility’s 30 residents are over 85 years old.

Research question: What is the total revenue from 2011-2015?

Description: We found out HBC’s data about its revenue. The web page provided us three main sources: total revenue, retail store sales and ecommerce sales, and also their growth rate from 2011-2015. Actually total revenue include retail store sales and ecommerce sales. Therefore we decided to use total revenue as our data of graph. The total revenue of Hudson’s Bay Company increased steadily every year. The growth rate was from 4%-8%.Until 2015. The largest increasing rate was 8% in 2015. The total revenue was increased by over 200 million during these years.

Project description
During past graduate studies, my research instructors utilized this three-prong approach in our course learning. They would challenge the class in the anticipatory, in exploring the spectrum of options, reviewing the research literature, planning, justifying our reasoning, and considering predictions. I remember one instructor emphasizing that the bachelors degree was about the that – the masters degree was about the how and the what – and the post-masters pursuit continued this building of knowledge with the why. Zimmerman & Croker (2014) conveyed that successful students in science understand the that of a particular strategy, coupled with the how and the why.
Also, collaboration and group research occurred for most of the high stakes assessments in these research courses, promoting a challenging dialogue, while strengthening the project construction, development, and delivery. Lastly, these professors informed that we not only would study research but that we would be doing research. This stance was also highlighted in the situated aspect with the thinking beingas acting being (Zimmerman & Croker, 2014, p. 250).
In my teaching instruction, I have increasingly realized the key elements of both collaborations and situated aspects in learning. I utilize student dyads and triads frequently in assignments. I also have gained an interest in visual literacy. I have the students create an infographic as part of their group research project. This taps into a visual image and aid in reflecting analysis of data and numbers (Zimmerman & Croker, 2014), with a powerful, persuasive, and quick impact and punch (Ovans, 2014).

Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) occur when bacteria invade the normally sterile urinary system, causing inflammation to the epithelium. If the infection is found in the urethra and bladder, it is considered a lower urinary tract infection. When the infection goes above the level of the bladder and into the ureters and kidney, it is considered an upper urinary tract infection or pyelonephritis (Huether & McCance, 2017). Risk factors for UTIs include female gender, diabetes, sexual intercourse, urinary incontinence and/or retention, and immobility (Arcangelo, Peterson, Wilbur, & Reinhold, 2017).

Lower urinary tract infections are most commonly caused by intestinal microbes like E. Coli. These pathogens bind to the urinary epithelium and create an inflammatory response. This response created edema and stretching of the bladder wall, which signals the stretch receptors to relay the feeling of fullness. This created the urgency, frequency, dysuria, and low back pain that are commonly felt. If left untreated, the epithelial wall will become more and more damaged, eventually leading to bleeding, ulcerations, and even gangrene (Huether & McCance, 2017).

Upper urinary tract infections, or pyelonephritis, can be caused by the pathogen climbing and spreading into the upper part of the urinary system. Unlike lower urinary infections, upper urinary infections can also be caused by contaminated blood flowing through the kidneys. If left untreated, abscesses can form in the adrenal medulla and cortex. Back or flank pain and costovertebral tenderness are symptoms that are more unique to the upper urinary infection and can help differentiate along with diagnostic testing. Fibrosis formation in the tubules can form after the initial infection (Huether & McCance, 2017).

Females are far more likely to suffer from urinary tract infections because of the shorter urethra and closer proximity to the rectum (Huether & McCance, 2017). Age is also a factor, as immobility, dehydration, and urinary incontinence increase the risk of developing UTIs. A UTI in an older adult can have different symptoms and manifestations, such as delirium, hallucinations, sudden decrease in mobility, and subsequent falls. These symptoms can be dangerous and may cause significant injury (Armstrong, 2015).

Along with antibiotics, urinary analgesics can help with the discomfort associated with urinary tract infections. Urised is a common urinary analgesic that is prescribed which often has anticholinergic side effects. Patients should be educated on the chance for urinary and/or bowel retention and when to seek treatment (Arcangelo, Peterson, Wilbur, & Reinhold, 2017). Encouraging fluid and fiber intake may help offset these side effects.
