For this research project, you will be using artifacts in local museums or government buildings as primary sources

HISTORY 101 MUSEUM RESEARCH PROJECT

(200 Points)

There are two kinds of historical sources: the first is primary sources that are either written documents or artifacts—paintings, sculptures, monuments, maps, etc.—that provide valuable insights into the past; the second is secondary sources that are written by historians and scholars that provide interpretations of primary sources.

For this research project, you will be using artifacts in local museums or government buildings as primary sources. Since you are acting as historians, you will rely on primary firsthand information for your clues about the past, only turning to secondary sources for background and general information. The whole purpose of this assignment is that I want to know your opinions about the artifacts and buildings you analyze. This project must be IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Any information from secondary sources (not required) must be in quotes with citations provided in footnotes.

MANDATORY GUIDELINES:

1. 3-4 double-spaced pages (using #12 font)

2. Must include one photo that you have taken of the artifact or building.

3. Must include one photo of yourself at the museum or building to verify that you were at the site.

4. Must be written in the first person as if this were a journal or diary entry.

5. Artifacts must be related to the history of western civilization from the period 3000BCE to 1600CE.

PROJECT CATEGORIES

Art of the Ancient World (3000BCE – 400BCE): Visit a gallery with Egyptian or Greek art and choose an artifact that you find interesting. Your paper should include the following: (1) What is the official name of the artifact; (2) Describe it in detail using your own words; (3) How does the artifact represent the characteristics of the culture in which it was created? (4) How has the gallery chosen to display the artifact?

Architecture of the Roman World (500BCE – 300CE): Choose a building or monument in our area that utilizes architectural components from the ancient Greeks or Romans. Your paper should include the following: (1) Describe in detail the building’s design and elements (arches, pillars, use of color, type of stone, etc.); (2) What is it about the design and elements that suggest Greek or Roman influences? (3) Why do you think the architects/builders chose to use the Greek/Roman design for this building?

Primary Sources of the Middle Ages (600-1400CE): We will learn that the primary preoccupations of the Middle Ages were religion and warfare. (1) Choose an artifact that represents either the religious emphasis of Christian Europe or the militaristic focus of this era (don’t overlook armor as an option); (2) Describe the artifact in your own words; (3) What do you think was its main function and purpose; (3) What feelings were the creators—whether artisans, artists, or scribes—trying to evoke in the viewers? (4) What specific groups of people might have been the audience for this piece? (5) What other themes, besides God and war, are evident in the collection as a whole?

SUGGESTED MUSEUMS

(In order to avoid wasted trips, make sure you check museum and gallery websites to see what exhibitions are available during your visit.)

National Gallery of Art, Washington, D. C.

National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, D.C.

National Museum of Natural History (Eternal Life in Ancient Egypt), Washington, D. C.

1What makes Hazmat Management different from Hazmat incident management? Look beyond operational issues and the hazards of the materials stay focused on top level organizational and strategic issues.

Student responses!!!

Jessie

I was fortunate enough to have been the Hazmat Site Supervisor as a contractor for the government for both 32nd Naval St. and Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI) Hazmat Centers, both in San Diego, Ca. It’s for this position I held for two years that catapulted me to becoming very familiar with Hazmat Management procedures and what the difference between Hazmat Management and the management of Hazmat incidents were and how the interacted with each other.

As, a Manager in Hazmat I was put in charge of all hazmat operation on two naval bases. My number one Management responsibility was to ensure the safety of ALL my employees who worked in or around the Hazmat warehouse and also those who transported hazardous goods. Number two priority was to protect the environment at all cost from all of the hazmat that I had in my 20,000 sq/ft. warehouse from spilling or contaminating both land and water. Keeping all compatible hazmat within their designated areas was a daily checklist to prevent cross contamination, fires or breakage or spills within their boxes, cans, barrels or tanks. Proper, frequent training and keeping everyone up to date on their required hazmat certifications/ qualifications was mandated not just by our company, but also local, state and federal entity’s. As a Hazmat Manager I was in charge of my people, sites and hazmat while being housed in our warehouse or transported on our trucks.

If incidents were to happen pertaining hazmat, i.e spills, leaks, fires or overturned trucks, these incidents would than be turned over to incident commanders with the knowledge and experience of properly handling the hazmat emergency. Hazmat incident management should be well trained on how to handle hazmat disasters such as spills, leaks and dangerous gases.

Both Hazmat Management and Hazmat incidents management should be well informed of the ERG and its procedures. While one handles the storage, handling and transporting and the everyday operations of the hazmat environment the other one is on standby for such emergencies that any hazmat emergency that may occur.

This is my opinion on what makes Hazmat Management different from Hazmat incident management?

Respectfully,

J.J

Kaylum

The easiest way to denote the difference in Hazmat Management and Hazmat Incident Management is understanding that Hazmat Management is a proactive approach in dealing with hazardous material, while Hazmat Incident Management is a reactive approach in dealing with hazardous material. Although these two terms do differ in the actions taken, practicing an excellent Hazmat Management program will allow for an easier mitigation of the material in a facility if an incident does take place.

There are several areas when dealing with Hazmat Management, with equal focus on all the areas. Hazardous Material is any material that will cause a health or physical hazard. Proper use, storage, shipment, placarding/labeling, and protective measures are needed to make sure that if there is an incident then the material is isolated to a specific location so that mitigation may be more simplified.

Hazmat Incident Management is the reaction to an incident involving hazardous material. If the management of the material is done correctly in the facility, then mitigating the incident should be somewhat textbook. However, it is important to treat the situation at the utmost level of danger. It is imperative to follow all safety concerns related to the material being handled (PPE, evacuation, decontamination).

While the perfect scenario would be that that hazardous material incident involved a chemical in a protective dike with the spill isolated into one area, this does not always happen. Hazardous materials do get transported on public infrastructure with a risk to bystanders if or when an incident happens. That is why it is imperative to follow all rules and regulations when dealing with hazardous materials to let all responding agencies know what is the requirements of the material is.

Influenza Virus, strain H1N1 (Swine Flu).

The topic for week 2 discussion is the Influenza Virus, strain H1N1 (Swine Flu). The Influenza virus alone has different subcategories kind of like the mother of all viruses who decided to have little off springs who turned out just like her. According to Morgrdige article Influenzas Virus Fact Sheet, all the subcategories are based on two proteins on the surface of the virus. They are the Hemagglution (H) and the Neuramindase (N). There are 16 known types of Hemagglution (H) and 9 known types of Nuramidase (N), so that is how typically the little ones are named so to say.

“Swine Flu” was typically found in pigs. Latter on in 2009 it was spreading like wildfire and soon enough people who werent even coming in contact with pigs were getting sick with the same Virus. The symptoms led off to be as your basic common cold or flu issues. The WHO (World Health Organization) then labeled it as a epidemics. Rest assured though, people can feel protected if they choose due to the fact that the CDC came up with a basic Influenza vaccine that covers most strains of the Virus, this one included.

In today’s media, the hype is now more than what it seems. People tend to lead on more than what there really is just for the rating. As well as more and more people seem to depend on the media to make there every day basic decisions. According to Time magazine, in an article found in the Time Health section, This Years Flu is now as bad as 2009 Swine Flu Epidemic, CDC., is your basic news scare to have people divided to be on one side of the fence than the other. Some people say that the vaccines are a gift from the God’s while other’s disgrace of it. Although eating healthy and being healthy isn’t always full proof, other’s will ten to disagree. Regardless of not of your opinion it is a personal choice I feel and one should not leave it up to the media to play a part in such an important role of your health.
