What motivates us

Discussion question and responses
Cecelia L week 3

What motivates us? Do we motivate ourselves? Do things motivate us? Are we motivated by power, wealth, or fame? The answers to these type of questions can help determine if we are intrinsically or extrinsically motivated. If we are an intrinsically motivated person, we do our job, learn new things, seek order, acceptance, and seek autonomy because we want to do these things. If we are an extrinsically motivated person, we may do things because we want a reward or because we want to please someone. In organizational behavior, intrinsic motivation is more desirable. People are more inherently focused on intrinsic growth motivation as opposed to external because intrinsic goals offer a healthier self-satisfying existence through autonomy, relatedness, and competence (Vansteenkiste & Lens, 2006; Fowler, 2014). Vansteenkiste and Lens (2006) found accomplishment of intrinsic goals stimulated more profound learning of the material, both short-term and long-term. Intrinsic goals lead to task identity.

Maslow’s concept of self-actualization is at the top of his needs theory which could be pondered as a path to intrinsic goals and motivation. As each need is met, higher order needs become emergent such as the self-actualization concept (Winston, 2016). Maslow says it is an interpersonal human relationship of safety, love, belongingness, feeling of worth and self-esteem (Maslow, 1987) that appears intrinsic.

Contingency theory could also meet the needs of employees of intrinsic or extrinsic motivational needs and goals. With contingency theory, the manager uses the type of management theory that will push for the best result based on the individual employee. Since not all theories work in all situations, the best management practice or style is contingent on the circumstance which could work agreeably in dealing with motivation.

Concerning the hiring of the American worker who is more intrinsically motivated than extrinsically, Prendergast (2008), discusses a great point which is for a “theory of intrinsic motivation to be useful, firms must have some control over it” (p. 201). She explains with an example of a social worker who is highly motivated to the point of ignoring costs. If the firm is not in control, costs may get out of check very quickly. Prendergast adds into her conclusion a novel idea; if money doesn’t motivate, then maybe preferences could be an alternative (Prendergast, 2008).

Identify patient who is seeking information about a specific disease process or diagnosis.
The following is the writing requirements for this assignment which shall be place unto four (4) Power Point Presentation Slides.
A. My name appears on the Scenario Power Point Slide/Slide # 1; Joel Reta, RN
I. Scenario Slide Example: This slide should include my name; Joel Reta. Next, outline briefly the scenario, then identify patient who is seeking information about a specific disease process or diagnosis. Be sure to include the nurse’s assessment of learning needs and the patient or family member’s readiness to learn. Be specific.

II. HERE IS THE SCENARIO TO BE USED IN SCENARIO SLIDE/SLIDE #1:
a. Scenario for Mr. Flores
b. Joel Reta, RN
c. Mr. Flores is an 88-year-old male recently diagnosed with colon cancer.
d. His wife has accompanied him to the oncologist’s office.
e. Both have a high school education.
f. Mr. Flores has no interest in his diagnosis; both his father and mother died at an early age from Colorectal cancer, and he believes nothing can be done for it.
g. Mrs. Flores is greatly interested in any treatment that might be available; she has been searching on the Internet for alternative cures.
h. Mrs. Flores has asked the nurse for help on how to determine whether a website is credible or not.

B. Only four (4) slides shall be submitted. Points will be deducted for additional slides according to my Nursing informatics Course Instructor. The four (4) slides pertain to the Scenario.
I. Slide/Slide #1: This slide should include my name; Joel Reta, RN. Next, outline a brief scenario, then identify a patient who is seeking information about a specific disease process or diagnosis. Be sure to include the nurse’s assessment of learning needs and the patient or family member’s readiness to learn.

II. Criteria Power Point Slide/Slide #2: NOTE: THIS IS THE ONLY SLIDE THAT REQUIRES A CITATION OF WHERE THE INFORMATION IS OBTAINED. This slide should address at least four criteria used to evaluate websites.
a. View Evaluating Internet Health Information: A Tutorial from the National Library of Medicine at: https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/webeval/webeval_start.html

b. My assigned text (Hebda, T. L., Czar, P. (2012). Handbook of Informatics for Nurses & Healthcare Professionals, 5th Edition) and/or other references. The task is to explain how to determine the credibility of websites and teach it to the patient and/or caregiver described in the Scenario Slide. Concentrate on evaluation of the information, not how to conduct a search. Assume that the patient or caregiver has basic Internet searching skills, a computer in the home, and can enter words in the query box in a search engine, such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, and so forth. The idea is to teach your patients how to evaluate websites (suspect and credible) as they relate to a specific disease process or diagnosis.

c. The format of the criteria should be logical and easy to read, for example, a table, a checklist, or Q & A. Be creative! Language should be appropriate for the educational level of the audience, in other words, the patient and/or caregiver as described in the Scenario Slide.
III. Suspect Site Power Point Slide/Slide #3: This slide should give the name and description of a suspect website. The suspect website must be related to the disease or diagnosis identified in the scenario. However, the site does not meet the criteria for a credible site, for example, gives inaccurate information, and so forth. You must provide a working link to the site. Wikipedia is not acceptable! Explain why the site is suspect based on the criteria you outlined in the Criteria Slide.

IV. Credible Site Power Point Slide /Slide #4: This slide should give the name and description of a credible website that you would recommend to the patient and/or caregiver/family member. The website must be appropriate for the general public and address the disease process or diagnosis identified in the Scenario Slide. Avoid sites that are aimed at healthcare professionals. Explain why the site is credible based on criteria that you outlined in the Criteria Slide.
C. Make certain that the links for the suspect and credible sites are working and formatted correctly.
D. Punctuation and sentence structure are correct with no spelling or grammatical errors.

– Inferential Statistics Article Critique

Inferential Statistics Article Critique

Read the article “Differential Effects of a Body Image Exposure Session on Smoking Urge Between Physically Active and Sedentary Female Smokers,”and identify the research questions and/or hypotheses as they are stated. Consider the following questions: What are the variables (sample sizes, population, treatments, etc.)? What are the inferential statistics used in this article? Were the proper steps of hypothesis testing followed?

Write a two- to three-page paper presenting the information listed below. Include a title page and reference page in APA style. Cite any references made to the article within the body of the paper in APA style. Your paper should begin with an introductory paragraph (including a thesis statement) and end with a concluding paragraph summarizing the major points made in the body of the paper and reaffirming the thesis. When writing the article critique, your paper must:

Determine what question(s) the authors are trying to answer by doing this research
Determine the hypothesis being tested and the concepts that were applied in this process.
Evaluate the article and critique the statistical analysis employed in the study.
Would you have included more and/or different variables? Explain your answer.
Examine the assumptions and limitations of the statistical study.
What would you have done differently in this case? Why?
Identify how the authors applied statistical testing to the problem.
Interpret the findings of the author(s) using statistical concepts.
You may access the Critical Thinking Community website for tips on how to formulate your thoughts and discussion of these questions in a logical and meaningful manner.

The Annotated Bibliography

Objective: Assess sources for your research paper (for credibility, reliability and relevance) and list references in proper APA format

Assignment Instructions: The Research Project/Paper for this class is divided into three major Assignments, 1) annotated bibliography, 2) abstract, and 3) final paper. The first part is the annotated bibliography. An annotation* (see note on annotations vs. abstracts below) is a is a summary and/or evaluation, and your annotated bibliography will include a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources (or references) you will use for your paper.

Your paper must include a minimum of three sources and these are to be included in this assignment, i.e. you are to write an annotation for each source. However you must use five or more sources in your final paper.

The reason the annotated bibliography is included as part of the research paper is because writing an annotated bibliography is important in that it provides excellent preparation for the final paper. One of the issues regarding any type of research, especially in the biosciences, medical, health/nutrition and exercise/fitness fields, is the credibility of the sources used, particularly those obtained from various websites. By forcing you to carefully evaluate each of your potential sources, the annotated bibliography helps you determine if in fact the source you chose is credible and also helps you determine how relevant it is to your topic and understand the topic better which will help you write your paper.

For this project, your annotated bibliography will include: 1) a complete citation for each source, 2) a summary of each source, 3) an assessment/evaluation of each source, and 4) a critique of each source. Three sources are required.

Citation:

Written in APA format. For more help with formatting, see APA handout.

Summary:

What is purpose of the source, review article, original research? What topics are covered? This is generally 1 -3 sentences that summarize the author’s main point. For more help, see this link on paraphrasingsources.

Assessment:

After summarizing the article (or research paper or book) it is necessary to evaluate it and also where you found it – its source (e.g. journal, website, etc). Briefly answer the following questions:

What is the format or type of source. How reliable is the information in the article and how credible is the source and the author(s)? Is this article biased or objective?

For more help, see this handout on evaluating resources.

Critique:

Once you’ve summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research. Why is this source relevant to your research paper and how can you use this source in your research project? What are the strengths and weaknesses? It is biased in any way? Compare the source with other sources in your bibliography.

*Annotations vs. Abstracts

Annotations in an annotated bibliography perform three functions: specify the source, evaluate the source, and critique the source. The annotation is a concise description of a particular source. It enables the researcher to establish the relevance of a specific journal article, book, research report, or government document, etc. Abstracts, on the other hand, are descriptive summaries that precede scholarly journal articles or can be found standing alone in periodical databases and are more detailed in this respect. Later in the course, Assignment 3 will specifically cover the abstract.
