Anxiety is an emotional and at times a physiological response which is a common experience among patients coping with any cancer diagnosis.

Anxiety is an emotional and at times a physiological response which is a common experience among patients coping with any cancer diagnosis. Anxiety can range from normal reactions to extreme dysfunction. Anxiety also has tremendous influence over a patient’s decision-making capabilities, treatment adherence, as well as their quality of life and function (Smith, Cope, Sherner, & Walker, 2014). The following articles, where choses to evaluate the validity, reliability, and applicability as to the effectiveness of certain interventions in alleviating anxiety for those afflicted with cancer.

The first article chosen Mei-Fen et al. (2015), utilized the highest level of research logistics level 1 or meta-analysis and systematic review. The purpose of this study was to perform a meta-analysis of the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions for relieving anxiety and depression in people with any form of cancer. Inclusion criteria for the study involved adult participants diagnosed with cancer and receiving mindfulness-based therapeutic intervention and reported changes in anxiety and depression levels. Studies that did not evaluate anxiety or depression levels were not included. The final number of studies included totaled 7 with 888 participants: 469 intervention group and 419 control group (Mei-Fen et al., 2015). The meta-analysis results yielded statistically significant improvements in anxiety and depression levels post mindfulness-based therapy intervention compared to control. Inferred limitations to the study appeared to be lack of mindfulness-based therapeutic consistency, variation of cancers and relatively small number of studies to evaluate. However, this leaves room for future evaluation and scientific inquiry. Overall it can be concluded that this study proves there is an evidence base practicality in the adoption of mindfulness-based interventions for relieving anxiety and depression in people with any form of cancer. However, further studies should be conducted since the research limitations leave room for greater scientific augmentation.

The second article chosen by Goerling, Foerg, Sander, Schramm, & Schlag (2011) explored the influence of psycho-oncologic intervention on the psychological condition of anxiety and depression patients regarding patients with cancer. Like the previous article it to actualized the strongest level for the hierarchy rating system level1utilizing randomized controlled trials (RCTs). For this study participants were categorized according to high or low risk and then randomly placed into either a psycho-oncologic support or control group. The sample was composed of 131 participants with all types of cancer represented and by the end of the study statistical findings showed a reduction of anxiety and depression in high-risk patients who had undergone psycho-oncologic intervention (Goerling, Foerg, Sander, Schramm, & Schlag, 2011). Some of the limitations incurred throughout this study was the fact that the time frame was short of only 12 months and only 49 of the total participants completed the full study. Therefore, it can be concluded that while psycho-oncologic intervention does support anxiety and depression reduction amongst cancer patients further research on a larger scale over a longer period is needed to observe its truest beneficial effects on patient care and wellbeing.

Based on the statistical documentation both articles researched clearly implemented quantitative methodology. This is further evident by the fact that quantitative studies tend to produce knowledge about very precise topics, creating a need for multiple studies over multiple years before conclusive knowledge is yielded. The most common quantitative designs used in health care research are survey, needs assessment, experimental, quasi-experimental, methodologic, meta-analysis, and secondary analysis (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2014 p 439). Although the qualitative methodology was not applied within the context of these articles it is still a well-founded research tool. For example, qualitative research is a method of research designed for discovery rather than verification. It is used to explore little-known or ambiguous phenomena. Interviewing is the main technique used in qualitative methods to explore the meaning of certain experiences to individuals. This method is time consuming and costly and uses small samples; therefore, generalizations cannot be made from findings (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2014 p 476).

‘Right To Work’ Laws

Posted: A Month AgoDue: 12/03/2018Budget: $22
Report Issue
One of the most hotly debated subjects in labor relations today is that of ‘Right to Work’ laws. It’s time to do some deeper research and take a position on this controversial issue. In a narrative, do the following: 1. What is the history of ‘Right to Work’ laws? Where did they come from? Who proposed them and why? Has their purpose or effect changed since original inception? 2. Accurately summarize both sides of the ‘Right to Work’ debate. What exactly is each side arguing, and what are the defenses to the claims of their opponents? 3. Articulate your own opinion on this issue. Are ‘Right to Work’ laws ethically sound? Are they good for unions? Good for employers? Good for employees? If one or more of these stakeholders are disadvantaged, how? Do the benefits of these laws outweigh the costs? Why or why not? 4. What is your prediction for ‘Right to Work’ laws in America? Currently, the country is divided more or less 50:50 in terms of states with and without such laws. Will they become the new norm? Or will they regress and be repealed in the states that have enacted them? Defend your predictions with sound reasoning.

Week Six Lecture

This final week our focus is on culture and leadership, as well as leadership ethics. These are two very important topics in terms of understanding and working with business strategies.

Our first chapter reading this week focuses on culture and leadership. What is culture and why is it important in terms of business strategies? There are many definitions for culture. According to our textbook, “culture is defined as the learned beliefs, values, rules, norms, symbols and traditions that are common to a group of people” (Northouse, 2013, p. 384).

Another definition on culture is that Culture refers to the cumulative deposit of knowledge, experience, beliefs, values, attitudes, meanings, hierarchies, religion, notions of time, roles, spatial relations, concepts of the universe, and material objects and possessions acquired by a group of people in the course of generations through individual and group striving (Texas A&M University, Culture, n.d., para. 1).

One last definition might be that “culture is the characteristics of a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts (Zimmermann, 2012, para. 1). Now that there is an understanding of what culture is, why is culture so important in terms of business strategies? There is a great interview that dives into the importance of aligning culture and strategies in organizations that is recommended to read. It can be found via this link:

Aligning Organizational Culture with Business Strategy (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (http://www.towerswatson.com/en-US/Insights/Newsletters/Global/strategy-at-work/2013/viewpoints-qa-aligning-organizational-culture-with-business-strategy).

The value of connecting both the organizations strategy, which would include the values, vision and mission, with the culture is a win-win for both the organization and the employees that come together that make it happen. As we have defined above, culture is a shared connection of knowledge, beliefs, values, etc. In an organizational culture these shared beliefs create an environment in which the stakeholders work together to not only be productive but to also create a successful organization. It should be noted that “culture formed by the moment, will also change by the moment, and ultimately it will disappear in a moment” (Myatt, 2012, para 4). Culture is not formed overnight. It is developed over time and becomes second nature to the organization and the manner in which it operates.

Below is a video that illustrates cultural dimensions:

Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Theory Video – Lesson and Example (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (http://youtu.be/mNntW_DA0x0)

When working with the term culture, there are many elements to consider. These include ethnocentrism and prejudice. Ethnocentrism is when a group feels their culture is superior to others. Another definition would be that “ethnocentrism is the tendency to believe that one’s ethnic or cultural group is centrally important, and that all other groups are measured in relation to one’s own (Princeton University, n.d., para. 1). Prejudice according to our textbook is to have a fixed “attitude, belief or emotion” towards another based on invalid information (Northouse, 2013, p. 385).

Below is an interesting video on sociology ethnocentrism and cultural relativism.

Moving forward, let’s look at Chapter 16, which focuses on leadership ethics. As we look at the contents of this chapter, let’s break down the meaning behind leadership ethics. As illustrated in our textbook, ethics relate to one’s “customs, conduct or character” as they relate to ones values, morale and what is and what is not appropriate (Northouse, 2013, p. 424).

An excellent article on the topic of leadership ethics that is recommended is:

Ethical Leadership: Right Relationships and the Emotional Bottom Line (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (http://www.ethicalleadership.com/BusinessArticle.htm)

The principles of ethical leadership focus on five disciplines:

· Respect Others

· Serves Others

· Shows Justice

· Manifests Honesty

· Builds Community (Northouse, 2013, p. 431).

1.

Greetings, Professor and classmates! It is hard to believe that we are in Week 7 of this course. I can’t believe that this is my final course and there are two weeks left of it. I think that, overall, this class has been extraordinary. I can’t think of any questions that I have off the top of my head. Maybe as I write this something will come to me, but for the most part, I believe, that this class has answered any and all questions that I had before taking it. I had some questions about getting licensed in counseling but, through completing the professional interview, all of those questions got answered. The professional organizations are ones that I will turn to in the future. Not all the ones that we looked at and researched applies to me and the field that I want to enter, but I am definitely going to be getting a membership in the ACA and the APA. The APA has a career section that I believe I will use once I am licensed to look for employment. I will also use the webinars for information in the future. I think that, in this course, we have covered just about everything and it has left me with no real questions. I think that the field of psychology is an interesting one. There are so many career choices that a person’s can go into in the field of psychology. I am definitely going on to earn a Master’s degree in Addictions Counseling at Liberty University. I have already applied, and been accepted. I have been working on registering for my courses while finishing up this course here at APUS. I look forward to finishing this class up and I look forward to my future career in counseling! Good luck to all!

2.

Hello Class,

I hope to become a psychology guru one day. Knowing the answers to all of the questions that one would ask, but first, one must ask the questions to be knowledgeable. I have a few of many questions and look forward to seeing what you all will voice out and our related thoughts of the matter.

1) WHAT INSPIRED YOU ALL TO PURSUE PSYCHOLOGY? Was there an experience that led you all to this profession? A calling? A certain profession within psychology that inspired you all?

2) WHAT DIFFERENCE CAN YOU/WANT TO MAKE WITHIN PSYCHOLOGY? A personal mission? A personal vendetta? What needs to change to make better?

3) WAS THE CHOSEN PROFESSION THE BEST FIT OR PLAN TO PURSUE ANOTHER FIELD WITHIN PSYCHOLOGY? The right career path? Changed mind? Pursuing another field within psychology entirely?

4) ANY INTERESTS IN TEACHING ABOUT THE CHOSEN PROFESSION? Anyone want to teach or produce literature that may not exist yet? Could the profession be described more in depth if presented the opportunity to? Spread the word about the chosen profession?

and to be quite frank…

5) WAS THIS COURSE HELPFUL IN DIRECTING A CHOSEN CAREER PATH? More direct assignments? More/less papers? Adequate/not adequate enough to grasp concept?

——————————————————————————————————————

I felt that I had a pretty good grasp on psychology as a whole. As mentioned before, I love studying behavior and how the mind operates via thoughts, emotions, behaviors, etc. I do have an immense love to help people solve life problems, hence why I feel that counseling psychology would be the best way to go.

I love to make a positive difference in one’s life. If I can make one’s life better it bring me great happiness.

I would love to be a jack-of-all-trades psychologist but I feel counseling would be the best fit for me.

I would love to teach but it is not exactly a pursued interest of mine, but I would love to speak at a conference of some sort.

This course did help me. I was on the fence with a few options but in doing more research and comparing notes I feel more defined in the end. This class could always include more work and more articles and the class can always be improved one way or another, but I did enjoy the simplicity and the direct, to the point material that this class bestowed, an overall success.

3.

Greetings Professor and Fellow Classmates,

We are here almost to the finish line. I want to say Thank you to all, for making this last seven weeks most engaging and enjoyable. I couldn’t ask for a better class to finish out. I didn’t think I would make through looking at my last two weeks course load. Each class has ten page papers and the other has 12 and 20 slide powerpoints and 10 page papers. These weekly forums have been refreshing and has helped me with getting prepared to write those ten page papers. Oh I’m suppose to be asking the class questions. Gotta stay focused.

Question 1. Whose having the after classes party?

2. How is everyone feeling at this point?

3. Has anyone decided where they are going for their Master’s?

4. What do you think of this proficiency test we need to take before graduation? No way to prepare for it either.

5. How did everyone’s interview go?

6. Has anyone still not found someone to interview? Sign up and join a professional organization. I joined SIOP emailed and cc’d ten people and got a response in less than an hour. I got the interview the next morning.

7. Is everyone going to commencement?

8. Anyone on the west coast want to drive cross country with me?

9. Are these questions suppose to be related to Psychology? lol

10. On a serious note, I would liked to know has anyone had second thoughts about the field of psychology they want to practice in?

The one question I would want to ask in relationships to careers in psychology is what area did you find to be least interesting and why? I ask this question because I found so many things to like about every area that I was curious as to if anyone disliked any area.

I’m praying success for each of you as you embark on your first, second or third career. Hope to see you at commencement, I’ll be trying to make it cross country if I don’t sedate myself heavily and fly.

Have a happy, healthy and safe summer and all the best in your graduate studies.

Signing off,

Adele

Outdoor Environment in Residential Aged Care Facilities

Literature Review

This chapter provides a review of literature relating to the connection between the outdoor environment in residential aged care facilities and the physical and psychological health of aged care residents. The review particularly pays attention to the impact of access to nature and outdoor areas on the overall wellbeing of individuals living in aged care facilities. Attention is also paid to the perceptions of aged care residents about the physical environment in residential aged care facilities. The review also identifies gaps in literature and suggestions for further research.

The impact of the physical environment in residential aged care facilities on the health of senior residents is a topic that has attracted increased scholarly attention in the recent past amidst growing population ageing and the increased demand for aged care. According to Bardenhagen and Rodiek (2015), access to outdoor space and nature can provide important physical and psychological benefits for aged residents by accelerating recovery from illness, reducing stress, improving sleep patterns, lowering blood pressure, enhancing vitamin D absorption, minimising fall risk, as well as increasing overall wellbeing and longevity. This arises from the long held view that the natural surrounding can positively affect one’s health and general wellbeing. Besides physical and psychological benefits, improved outdoor space can also boost resident satisfaction with aged care as well as occupancy levels (Bardenhagen and Rodiek, 2015; Nordin et al., 2015; Ausserhofer et al., 2015). The implication is that residential aged care facilities ought to be designed in a manner that promotes the physical and psychological wellbeing of aged residents.

Actually, in line with its extensive advocacy for active ageing, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has provided guidelines for the design of residential aged care facilities. The guidelines generally require that residential aged facilities should be designed in accordance with three fundamental principles: health, safety, and participation (Miller et al., 2014). Essentially, the facilities should promote physical wellbeing, prevent injuries, and foster socialisation and involvement in meaningful activity. This contributes to more successful aging. In fact, as put by Malderen et al. (2013), the physical environment in which older adults live is one of the major determinants of healthy aging.

Literature has documented the physical and psychological benefits associated with the outdoor environment in residential aged care facilities. In their systematic review of 17 studies (nine quantitative, seven qualitative, and one mixed methods), Whear et al. (2014) established that garden and outdoor spaces positively impacted the physical and mental wellbeing of individuals with dementia living in aged care facilities. The review particularly found that garden use was associated with reduced levels of agitation. Nonetheless, the mechanism through which gardens and outdoor spaces reduce agitation remains quite unclear. A randomised controlled study of 601 residents with dementia living in 38 residential aged care homes in Australia, however, found that positive environmental stimuli affected neither agitation nor depression (Chenoweth et al., 2014). Even so, the study found that there was an improvement in the quality of life, though not significant. A review of 14 studies conducted in the period 1994-2014 also did not find significant……………………………………
